New Renewable Energy Developments

Two new renewable energy developments were approved in Argyll and the Highlands, confirming Scotland’s commitment to renewable energy and improving environmental impact.
The two schemes should be operational by 2008, with a hydroelectric station near Inveraray generating enough energy to supply electricity to 2000 homes and a windfarm in the highlands extended to supply around 33,000 households every year.
It is hoped that 18% of electricity generated in Scotland should come from renewables by 2010 – a target set out by the Scottish Climate Change Program
200 New Wind turbines

Npower renewables have submitted applications to the UK and Welsh governments to build 200 giant wind turbines 13 to 15 kilometres off the North Wales coast. The huge turbines could be up to 165 metres tall at the highest point and the electricity generated by them will travel ashore via subsea power cables and four electrical substations.
The proposed windfarm could supply up to 2% of UK households and significantly decrease carbon emissions. There are some objections to the development from the Chamber of Shipping and also environmental campaigners concerned about the welfare of sea birds. It has also been noted that electricity from offshore windfarms costs more than from conventional sources.
If the application is successful, work should start building the turbines in 2008.
